The Racial World of North East India
The northeast is India's chief tribal area, and the numerous tribes of
Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa, Nagalland, Manipur and entire region makes a
glorious and colorful portray of Indian history through its ethnic world.
The clannish 'cradle of tribe' is spread over, all northeastern parts of
Indian sub-continent. The people here are strongly built, simple, honest and
hard working. In this New World the man has to fight nature all the time.
This continuous battle however, has made these tribal flocks vigorous and
tough.
Tribal India is packed with great charms from 1,000 yr. of tribal
tradition. In an effort to encourage tourism, the Center has taken up steps
to promote rural and remote destinations in the beautiful and
tribal-dominated Northeast parts of India.
The tribes of Arunachal Pradesh bear many similarities to the hill tribes,
who are mainly dwelling across an arc that extends from the eastern end of
the Himalayas through Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand into Laos.
Tribes of Arunachal Pradesh are highly civilized, well nourished as well
as, maintain calm and peaceful environment- there are no land disputes among
the tribal folks.
The Naga tribal region is spread over 7 districts with 16 tribes and
sub-tribes inhabiting it. These tribes are commonly, very lively people full
of folklore. They enjoy seasonal songs sung solo, duet or in chorus.
Where as Orissa the main habitat of the tribal population of north east
India is a modern state with an ethnic past that is still resounding. The
main tribal regions are to be found in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar
Phulbani, Sambalpur, Kalahandi and Koraput. As many as 62 tribes exist in
Orissa - Kondhs, Koyas, Bondas, Gadabas, are some of the important tribes
who have retained their individuality and their close bond with nature.
During the month of January and February, a 'Tribal Fair' is organized at
Bhubaneshwar, that is a great source of attraction among the tourist where
they get the opportunity to watch this ethnic world embellished with the
magic of their art, craft and culture. For those anxious for of a closer
look, many tour operators from Bhubaneshwar and other cities arrange trips.
The Tribal Museum at Bhubaneshwar however is quite far-reaching and offers
commensurate lore on the art, crafts, housing and life-styles of the various
tribal groups.
