Trekking / Mountaineering
The valley of Himachal Pradesh offers some of the best trekking trials on
the winding tracks of the hilly slopes. The best time to under-take trekking
is from May to October, when the whether is quite pleasant. Normally the
trekking trials are done between the altitude of 1500m and 6000m. The tracts
of Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahaul capture the spirit of the 2500-km vast extended

Adventure with Golf
Ahead of Shimla is the sight of oldest golf courses in India. Naldera -
23km from Shimla is the idle location for golf course. Initially the British
Viceroy of India- Lord Curzon inaugurated the course by seeing the natural
topography of the region. This is a 9-hole course that is considered as one
of the most challenging in the country. Another course more popular, at
Annandale in Shimla is also a nine hole course managed by the army, beside
these there is one more golf course popular among the tourists at the hilly
ground of Khajjiar - 22 km from Dalhousie and 24- km from Chamba .
For altitudinous mountain stimulation nothing can surmount the occultism of
heli-skiing. Heli-Skiing is quite thrilling as beneath the vast blue skies
the adventure seekers are conveyed by a helicopter to a snowcapped peak. A
foray of ten minutes can carry the skiers to the top of a 14000 feet high
slope. It is a breathtaking adventure as one speedily buzz down the hilly

Rohtang Pass, Deo Tibba and Chanderkhani Pass near the resort town of Manali
The deep cut slopes of Kufri and Mahasu near Shimla offers some of the best
opportunities for skiing in India. Far-reaching slopes exist at Narkanda -
64 km from Shimla, at Kullu-Manali, the Directorate of Mountaineering and
Allied Sports offers a variety of courses and facilities for skiing that are
easily taken up in the great slopes of Solang area near Manali. Few
companies in the private sector also offer ski courses and associated
Ice - Skating
The Shimla ice-skating ring offers excellent opportunities for Ice-skating
enthusiast. It is one of the biggest open-air zones with permanent frozen
ice in this part of the world. The adventure with ice-skating normally takes
place during December and ends up in February. There are two sessions every
day, in the morning and in the evening.
Membership is available for the season as well as for shorter terms and
even for single sessions. Skates are available at the ring.
The smooth peak of Billing, in Kangra, is the sight of this adventurous
sport. Since 1984 the region facilitates 5 national and 3 international
hang-gliding rallies every year. A fairly recent sport- para-gliding that
has invariably acquired distinction is held at various places in the state -
Bundla Dhar near Bilaspur, in the kullu valley and at Intkali in the Pabbar
valley near Rohru in Shimla district.
Himachal is an angling paradise facilitating several shallow waters for
trout and mahaseer fishes, besides Brown and Rainbow Trout are also to be
found in the river streams. Rohru in the Pabbar valley at Shimla have
several spots absolute for fishing. Kinnaur's Baspa River in the Sangla
valley and Uhl River near Barot also hold trout. The reservoir of the
Maharana Pratap Sagar leading to the town of Dehra and Gobind Sagar near
Bilaspur are other location for angling.
Water and River Sports
River-rafting or white-water rafting and other river water sports are also
available on the waters of Gobind Sagar nearBilaspur, the Chamera Lake near
Dalhousie and at the Manali-Kullu National Highway.
Mountaineering and Rock Climbing
The hills around Manali, presently forms the essence of mountaineering in
Himachal. The Chandra Bhaga ranges the Pir Panjal and Dhalaudhar ranges are
quite captivating. The State also has several other areas where Institute of
Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali and its branch at Dharamsala
(Kangra) offer this activity.
Indian Airlines flights for Himachal takes off every Monday, Wednesday and
Friday. Himachal can also be accessed through its toy train coaches. The
regular train coach from Kalka to Simla and Siliguri to Darjeeling runs
through the curves of hilly terrain.
